We’ve recently expanded our product offering with an infrastructureless or “ad hoc” ranging solution.

Why/when to go “infrastructureless”?

For a “traditional” UWB RTLS setup, you need to place anchors at fixed locations. Autopositioning these anchors can provide an easy start, but accurate measurement (e.g. with a total station) of their coordinates will provide more accurate results.

In some scenario’s the area of interest for RTLS tracking is continuously changing. Calculation accurate local positions may not be possible, but in some scenario’s even only relative distances (between tags) can provide value. Maybe relative positions can be calculated in an ad-hoc fashion.

A network of such ad hoc clusters, which we like to call a (UWB) MANET, can be interesting for specific applications. For example in sports races, outputting distances between groups of athletes.
